UFC on Fox 23: Shevchenko vs Pena

UFC on Fox: Shevchenko vs. Pena is the 23rd in the UFC on Fox series, and it features a possible title eliminator in the women’s bantamweight division. Former muay thai champion Valentina Shevchenko takes on Julianna Pena, who won The Ultimate Fighter: Rousey vs. Tate season. In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone looks to continue his welterweight run against Jorge Masvidal. This is the first card in Denver since UFC 150 in August 2012, and the altitude always plays a role in Colorado.

How To Bet UFC

When you’re betting on UFC, there are a few options that you’ll want to look at. DSI gives you the option to bet on the fight winner, which is just a straight up bet. You’ll see odds like -120 or +250. What that means is if it’s a minus sign, like -120, that’s the amount you bet to win $100. If it’s a plus sign, that’s the amount you win if you bet $100.

You’ll also see different prop bets on happenings in the fight. For example, you can bet an over-under if you think the fight will be long or short, and you can also bet on how the fight will end (knockout, submission, decision and so on).

Main Card

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Julianna Pena – Women’s Bantamweight

Shevchenko (13-2) is coming off the biggest win of her MMA career over former champion Holly Holm in July, and she showed resilience by coming back after losing the first round. Pena (8-2) has won four straight, and she is a strong jiu-jitsu artist who will have to get this fight to the mat. Shevchenko showed versatile striking, no small feat against Holm, and her takedown defense will be tested against Pena. If she can keep the fight standing, Shevchenko should win. Take her with your betting picks in this spot.

Pick: Shevchenko

Donald Cerrone vs. Jorge Masvidal – Welterweight

Cerrone (32-7, 1 NC) is 4-0 at 170 pounds after a head-kick KO against Matt Brown in December, his fourth stoppage at welterweight. He’s clearly found a new level of success at a weight class many people thought he’d struggle at. Masvidal (31-11) has lost three of four since prior to winning his last two, including a TKO stoppage of Jake Ellenbeger, and he is very tough. He will have to end this quickly, but the longer it goes, Cerrone’s varied striking and underrated grappling should win out.

Pick: Cerrone

Andrei Arlovski vs. Francis Ngannou – Heavyweight

Arlovski (25-13, 1 NC) is a former two-time UFC champion (once was interim), but he has lost three in a row after being submitted by Josh Barnett in September and all three were stoppages. Ngannou (9-1) has won eight straight and is 4-0 in the UFC with four stoppages, and while he is a good striker, Ngannou can handle himself on the mat. This probably will not last long, and might spell the end of Arlovski’s UFC career. Watch the conditioning of these heavyweights in Denver the longer that this fight goes.

Pick: Ngannou

Hector Lombard vs. Brad Tavares – Middleweight

Lombard (34-6-1, 2 NC) is back at 185 pounds after struggling to make weight at welterweight, where he gassed out in a loss to Neil Magny. Then he lost to Dan Henderson at 185 pounds in June, but in both fights, Lombard definitely struggled after a good start. Tavares (14-4) is a tough striker who has split his last four, but both of his losses came by knockout and Lombard is one of the most powerful middleweights on the planet. He should win this.

Pick: Lombard
