Lyoness-Open

Golf Odds: Joost Luiten and Bernd Wiesberger are co-favorites at odds of 7-1 to win the Lyoness Open which starts on Thursday, June 9th. This event, which used to be called the Austrian Open, was first played in 1990. Bernd Wiesberger became the second Austrian to win this event when he won in 2012 and he nearly won again in 2014 but lost to Mikael Lundberg in a playoff. Luiten won in 2013 while last year it was Chris Wood winning this event.

Here is a look at the tournament and European Golf predictions.

Top Contenders

Joost Luiten

It is questionable whether or not Luiten should be favored in this event considering he is not playing well of late with a tie for 44th, a missed cut and a tie for 27th in his last three events. The good news for Luiten is that he has played this course three times and finished tied for third, won in 2013 and tied for third.

Bernd Wiesberger

The Austrian has played in his home event 11 times and won just once, in 2012. He did finish second in 2014 and he tied for fourth in 2004 and tied for fifth in 2011. He inexplicably missed the cut in last year’s tournament. Wiesberger arrives this year in good form having made eight straight cuts and he finished tied for 15th at the BMW PGA Championship.

Chris Wood

He is the defending champion and coming off a win in the BMW Championship. He will face a lot more pressure this week as the defending champion and he may be overvalued at odds of 8-1.

Others to Consider

After the top three it is a crapshoot with a number of players who might surprise. Gregory Bourdy was playing well in this event last year and led going into the final round and then shot a 78. If he can forget about that round he has a ton of value at odds of 25-1. Richard Bland is an interesting darkhorse this week. He has three top tens this season and he has played well in the past at Diamond. And don’t forget about Lee Slattery who tied for fourth in this event in 2014 and he was tied for 10th after two rounds last year.

I will take Wiesberger at odds of 7-1 and then go with three longshots in Bourdy at 18-1, Ramsay at 22-1 and Slattery at 40-1.
