David Blough lost the job as the Detroit Lions’ backup quarterback less than a day after defeating Tim Boyle for the position. According to a source with knowledge of the decision, the Lions are dismissing Blough after he was initially included on the 53-man roster, as was reported by NFL Network Insider on Wednesday morning. The Lions already have a standby in place. According to NFL Network Insider, the organization intends to hire former 49ers quarterback Nate Sudfeld as a backup for Jared Goff. Sudfeld was a player that Detroit considered trading for, but ultimately decided to keep after he was cut after the Jimmy Garoppolo turnabout in San Francisco. In this season’s episode of Hard Knocks, which detailed his up-and-down preseason, Blough played a significant role. The 27-year-old definitely defeated Boyle for the backup position after dropping a fumble that lost Detroit its first preseason game. Blough had been a member of the Lions for the previous three years.
