After Week 2 of the preseason, the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback for this season will be decided. The preseason game between the Panthers and the visiting New England Patriots on August 19 has been designated by Panthers head coach Matt Rhule as a test for the quarterback competition between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. According to ESPN, Rhule remarked, “I’m not setting a deadline on the quarterback position until after we get back from the Patriots week. That week will really put us to the test. That will definitely reveal where the guys are.” Since Mayfield’s trade-in to the team before the start of training camp in July, Darnold and Mayfield have swapped reps. Darnold has made it clear that he and Mayfield get along well and anticipate the competition will bring out the best in each of them, while Mayfield has expressed appreciation for the process’ openness. At the time, there wasn’t a certain front-runner.
