Thursday Night FootballBetting Preview: Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh is the heavy favorite and is currently giving up 15 points to Miami. If the Steelers get behind early it will create a nice in-game betting opportunity. Vegas has placed the over/under (O/U) at 43 points.

The betting odds have shifted some from where they initially opened. The line opened at -17 and the game’s O/U was set originally at 42.5.

The Dolphins are 2-4 against the spread (ATS) and are down 3.0 units so far in 2019. They’ve been a good under bet and have posted an O/U record of 2-4.

The Steelers have lost 1.8 units this season. The team is 3-2-1 ATS and also has an O/U record of 2-4.

The Dolphins have gone 0-6 straight up (SU) in 2019 while the Steelers are 2-4 SU.

The Dolphins dropped one to Buffalo 31-21 in a Week 7 contest where their defense allowed the Bills to rush for 117 yards on 23 attempts. John Brown had a good day for the Bills in that one with 83 yards and a score on five catches. On the offense, Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 23 passes for 282 yards, along with a TD and an interception. Mark Walton (66 yards on 14 rush attempts) spearheaded the ground attack. Preston Williams (six receptions, 82 yards) and DeVante Parker (five catches, 55 yards, one TD) handled the receiving duties in the defeat.

Pittsburgh just got a 24-17 win over the Chargers. The defensive secondary allowed the Chargers to air it out for 320 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Henry had a good showing in the loss for Los Angeles, posting 100 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches. For Pittsburgh, Devlin Hodges completed 15-of-20 passes for 132 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Benny Snell Jr. (75 yards on 17 rush attempts) and James Conner (41 yards on 16 carries, one TD) mounted the running game while Conner (seven receptions, 78 yards, one TD) and Diontae Johnson (two catches, 14 yards) led the receiving corps in the win.

Miami has run the ball on 35.9 percent of its offensive possessions this year while Pittsburgh has an overall rush percentage of 40.8 percent. The Dolphins have produced 66.7 rush yards/game and have three scores on the ground this year. The Steelers are totaling 76.5 rush yards per game and have four total rushing TDs.

If the results so far this season are any indication, then the Steelers should hold an advantage along both the offensive and defensive fronts, as their offensive line has given up only five sacks while the D-line has logged 20 sacks. The Dolphins O-line has given up 24 sacks and their defense has generated only seven sacks.

The Dolphins offensive scheme has averaged 214 yards in the air overall and has four passing TDs so far. The Steelers have produced 205.3 pass yards per outing and have eight total pass scores.

Defensively, Miami has allowed 160.8 rush yards and 262.3 pass yards per game. The Pittsburgh defense has given up 267 yards per game to opposing passers and 110.2 yards per game to opposing runners. The Steelers are giving up an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of just 5.6 to opposing QBs, while the Dolphins have allowed an ugly 10.37 ANY/A.

Offensively, Fitzpatrick is up to 585 passing yards this season. He’s completed 50-of-87 attempts with two scores through the air and five interceptions. He has a 4.00 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number sits at 7.72 over the past two outings.

Devlin Hodges has completed 15-of-20 passes for 132 yards, one TD and one INT for Pittsburgh. His ANY/A stands at 5.35 for the season and 6.03 over his last two games.
