Jorge Linares vs Anthony Crolla
Jorge Linares will defend his WBA and The Ring lightweight titles, as he takes on Anthony Crolla on Saturday, March 25 in Manchester, England. The fight is a rematch from an excellent bout that Crolla won by unanimous decision last September. “The last fight was a fight of the year contender and Linares boxed out of his skin, but one thing we know about Anthony is his ability to bounce back, and he is so determined to win this fight,” promoter Eddie Hearn said. “He has created some wonderful atmospheres at the Manchester Arena over the last few years and I believe March 25 will be the best yet.”
Event: Jorge Linares vs. Anthony Crolla
Date: Saturday, March 25th, 2017
Location: Manchester Arena, Manchester, England
Boxing Odds: Jorge Linares -245
Jorge Linares (41-3, 27 KO’s)
Linares won the first fight against Crolla by scores of 117-111, 115-114 and 115-113. Linares overcame a right hand injury to win that fight and take Crolla’s world title. Linares will be returning to fight Crolla in Manchester again.
“I am really excited to be going back to Manchester,” Linares said. “I was treated very well by everyone and gained a lot of new British fans. Crolla is a tremendous fighter with a lot of heart so I know I must train twice as hard for another tough fight. I want to thank Eddie Hearn at Matchroom, my promoters at Golden Boy Promotions and Teiken. I promise another great performance and assure that the belts are returning home with me.”
Anthony Crolla (31-5-3, 13 KOs)
Crolla will be looking for revenge in this fight as he gets an immediate chance to get his belt back. “There had been lots of talk on the rematch since the first fight with Jorge so I’m delighted to finally get this announced,” Crolla said. “I’ve been in the gym right the way up to Christmas even though the fight is a little bit of a while off. I’m working hard and making improvements. I will have to show improvements in the rematch if I am to win. I came up short on the night against the better man. With those improvements I believe I can change the result this time around.”
Crolla has a lot of respect for Linares saying, “Jorge is the best and I want to be the best – beating him stakes my claim. I didn’t win the first one but I had success and I can work on that. We’ve both got great teams behind us, I believe if I make the right changes for the fight I will take the titles.”
Crolla thinks that he was doing well in their first fight until the sixth round. “I felt like I was in control up until the sixth round [when] he caught me with a great shot and buzzed me. I felt that in the next round it took a bit of zap out of my punches and legs. Fair play to Linares — he used his experience and won the last few rounds, which is usually what I do.”
If Linares can get the win it would set up a unification bout against Mikey Garcia later this year. The WBC has said that Linares and Garcia will meet if Linares beats Crolla.
