The Daytona 500 is neck-and-neck with the Indianapolis 500 in terms of prestige, and it is easily the biggest race on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. It was called the Inaugural 500 Mile International Sweepstakes when it first started in 1959, and it has had a few sponsors along the way: STP, Dodge and Toyota, namely. But the Daytona 500 is big enough on its own that it does not really need a sponsor. You might hear of the Daytona 500 referred to as the “Super Bowl of NASCAR”. Drivers will go 200 laps around 2.5 miles of Daytona International Speedway, one of two superspeedway tracks in NASCAR, along with Talladega Superspeedway. Drivers will usually work with their teammates when it comes to the draft, and the race might be quiet for 150 laps. But with 50 laps to go, the action heats up and then it becomes every driver for themselves in the last 10-15 laps. Continue
