2013 Shortened NHL Season
Because of the NHL lockout, the NHL will play a shortened season in 2013 with teams playing a 48-game schedule. The NHL regular season is expected to begin on January 19th and continue into April. Because of the compact schedule, teams will be playing no games out of their conference. The schedule will have teams playing three games against the ten teams outside of their division within the conference and then five games each against the other four teams within the division. That would make 18 division games and 30 games outside of the division. The Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks began the 2013 regular season as the favorites to win the 2013 Stanley Cup.
2013 NHL Playoffs
This year’s NHL playoffs will be the same as normal even though the regular season was shorter. Teams will still play full seven-game series in the 2013 NHL playoffs. Teams with the better record will have home ice advantage in Games 1, 2, 5 and 7.
LA Kings Won 2012 Stanley Cup
The Los Angeles Kings won their first Stanley Cup title in 2012 as they defeated the New Jersey Devils four games to two. Dustin Brown was the key scorer for the Kings while Jonathan Quick was superb in goal. The Kings turned their season around in mid-December in 2012 after head coach Terry Murray was fired and replaced with Darryl Sutter.

NHL Playoff Schedule
The NHL seeds teams from 1 through 8 in each conference. The first round which is also known as the conference quarterfinals has 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5. In the second round which is known as the conference semifinals, the teams are re-seeded. This is unlike the NBA playoffs where the 1 vs. 8 winner takes on the 4 vs. 5 winner. The next round is the Conference Finals and the final round is the Stanley Cup Finals where the conference winners player each other. All of the playoffs are best-of-seven game series.
