Tulsa Golden Hurricane

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane had a nice season a year ago as they won 20 games and made the NCAA Tournament. Repeating that success in 2016-2017 is extremely unlikely as the team has to replace most of their top players from last season.

The list of players who Tulsa has to replace this season is long as both top scorers James Woodard and Shaquille Harrison are gone. Other players who started that have to be replaced are Rashad Smith, Brandon Swannegan and D’Andrew Wright.

The Golden Hurricane brought in transfers Eugene Artison and Junior Etou along with freshmen Martins Igbanu and Will Magnay. Artison did well at College of Southern Idaho as he averaged 14.2 points per game while Etou averaged 7.4 points per game with Rutgers. Tulsa also added junior college transfers Jaleel Wheeler and Cory Henderson.

The only player of note returning for Tulsa this season is Pat Birt who averaged 12 points per game last season.  Tulsa does bring back Sterling Taplin and he could be the starting point guard this season. Tulsa also gets TK Edogi back after he sat out last season due to injury.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane Picks

The Golden Hurricane have a lot of talent to replace but head coach Frank Haith has done a decent job in recruiting. The key for Tulsa is how much they get out of Edogi who returns from injury. If he can play a big role and some of the transfers pan out well then Tulsa could be better than expected this season.

It is still hard to see Tulsa matching last year’s success so the best case scenario for this team is to finish with a winning record and play in one of the second-tier college basketball tournaments.
