Tennessee Volunteers

The rebuilding process for the Tennessee Volunteers under head coach Rick Barnes will continue in 2016-2017. Barnes is starting to get his players into the system but it is going to be at least another year before he has enough talent to contend on a nightly basis in the SEC.

The Volunteers will have a total of 12 freshman and sophomores on this year’s team. Tennessee do have senior Robert Hubbs III returning but he fell out of favor last season under Barnes and will have to show he deserves a starting spot this season. The other two top contributors in the backcourt this season should be Detrick Mostella and Lamonte Turner.

The frontcourt is led by Admiral Schofield who averaged almost 8 points per game last season. Newcomers include Utah State transfer Lew Evans who averaged 8.3 points with the Aggies and freshman Grant Williams.

Tennessee Volunteers Picks

The Volunteers need more time to get players into the system under Barnes. Tennessee simply doesn’t have enough talent to compete for a title in the SEC right now. Barnes is a good coach and he will eventually get this team going in the right direction. It may be too much to ask for Tennessee to finish with a winning record in 2016-2017 but if the newcomers produce it is at least possible this team could play in a postseason tournament like the CBI.
