SMU Mustangs

The SMU Mustangs begin a new era in 2016-2017 as gone is Larry Brown and in is Tim Jankovich who was the associate head coach for the last four years under Brown. The Mustangs won 25 games last season but they were ineligible for the postseason.

The Mustangs have a huge hole to fill as gone is Nic Moore who was AAC Player of the Year twice at SMU. The Mustangs also have to find replacements for Markus Kennedy, Jordan Tolbert and Keith Frazier.

The newcomers for SMU are Semi Ojeleye, Harry Froling and Leo Kontopoulos. The key player could be Ojeleye who transferred in from Duke.  The Mustangs also brought in Dashawn McDowell and Tom Wilson to help in the backcourt.

2016-2017 SMU Mustangs Betting

The Mustangs are not going to be as good as they were a year ago but they do have some talent with three starters returning including Ben Moore who averaged 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks last season. The Mustangs also have Shake Milton who averaged 10.5 points and 2.7 assists as a freshman.

SMU might be a better bet this season than they were a year ago as not nearly as much will be expected from the team this season which should give them more betting value.

SMU Mustangs Picks

The Mustangs are probably going to take a step back this season as they simply can’t replace Moore. SMU does have some decent pieces so they are not going to be terrible but competing for the title in the American this season seems unlikely. Playing in the NIT is probably the best hope for SMU in 2016-2017.
