Memphis Tigers

The Memphis Tigers will have a new look as Tubby Smith takes over as head coach in place of Josh Pastner. The Tigers had made the NCAA or NIT in 15 straight seasons but the last two years have been disappointing and Pastner is gone.

The Tigers will have to replace Shaq Goodwin and Ricky Tarrant this season. Goodwin averaged 14.7 points per game a year ago while Tarrant averaged 11.7 points and 3.4 assists per game. The team also lost Trahson Burrell who scored in double digits and they have to replace their best outside shooter in Avery Woodson.

The Tigers are going to struggle this season because they don’t have enough incoming talent to replace what was lost. They added Keon Clergeot, Christian Kessee and Jimario Rivers. Kessee averaged 14.6 points with Coppin State last year and he will need to contribute immediately if the Tigers are to contend this season.

The Tigers will look to go with Kessee and Crawford in the backcourt with the two Lawson’s and Rivers upfront. Dedric Lawson led the team in scoring and rebounding last season. He should have another good season but whether or not he gets any help is the question.  K.J. Lawson missed most of last season but if he can stay healthy he could be a factor this season. Jimario Rivers will probably get the other starting spot but there is no doubt that other players will see time at forward including Jake McDowell.

Memphis Tigers Picks

The Tigers don’t have enough talent to contend this season in the American Athletic Conference so look for head coach Tubby Smith to install his system and treat this as a rebuilding season. The Tigers will probably go to a small lineup at times and just look to pressure opposing teams and play fast.

The Tigers are at least a year away from contending in the American Athletic Conference and it may be longer than that depending upon how well Smith recruits.  The 2016-2017 season probably won’t be a good one for Memphis and they will likely finish with a losing record and miss out on postseason play.
