Iowa Hawkeyes

The Iowa Hawkeyes surprised a lot of people a year ago as they won 22 games and made the NCAA Tournament.  It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for head coach Fran McCaffery but the Hawkeyes played well and actually went 12-6 in the Big Ten. Iowa beat Temple in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Villanova.

The Hawkeyes will have a difficult time matching last year’s record as McCaffery has to replace four starters from last year’s team. Jarrod Uthoff led the team with nearly 19 points per game. Also gone are Adam Woodberry, Anthony Clemmons and Mike Gesell.

The good news for Iowa is that Peter Jok returns and he averaged 16.1 points per game last season. The Hawkeyes have some good freshmen who could make an impact including forward Tyler Cook. Ryan Kreiner may also see playing time upfront. The backcourt has Jordan Bohannon, Maishe Dailey and redshirt freshman Isaiah Moss.

2016-2017 Iowa Hawkeyes Betting

The Hawkeyes almost assuredly won’t be as good as they were a year ago as very few teams can replace four starters and thrive. The Hawkeyes will rely heavily on Jok to have a big year. He could be joined in the backcourt by Christian Williams who played 20 games last season as a freshman. Brady Ellingson may also see playing time if he starts shooting the ball better.

Iowa is well coached and they could be undervalued a bit this season in a loaded Big Ten conference. The Hawkeyes made the NCAA Tourney a year ago but they were not that good to bettors going 14-16 ATS. Iowa could be better this season ATS as they will be underdogs more often.

Iowa Hawkeyes Picks

The Hawkeyes are going to need Jok to do a lot this year if they are to stay competitive and they also need Dom Uhl to pick up the slack in the front court.

Iowa has reached the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons and while it is never a good idea to count out a McCaffery coached team, the Hawkeyes seem destined to fall short of the big dance this season and end up playing in the NIT or CBI.
