Illinois Fighting Illini

The Illinois Fighting Illini are coming off a very disappointing season a year ago as they went just 15-19. The Illini have missed the NCAA Tournament in each of the past three seasons and head coach John Groce is officially on the hot seat. Illinois won just five games in the Big Ten a year ago and that is simply not good enough for a school that made the NCAA Tournament in six of nine years under former head coach Bruce Weber.

The Illini will be getting Tracy Adams back this season after he missed each of the past two years due to injury. He did averaged 10.7 points per game three years ago. The Illini badly need Adams because they lost Kendrick Nunn who was kicked off the team. Nunn averaged 15.5 points per game last season.

2016-2017 Illinois Fighting Illini Betting

Illinois may not be much better in 2016-2017 than they were a year ago. They do get Abrams back and he should start at one of the guard positions along with Malcolm Hill who led the team in scoring last season. The Illini may go with a three-guard lineup and start Jalen Coleman-Lands along with Abrams and Hill. Te’Jon Lucas is an incoming freshman who should be a backup guard.

There is not much to get excited about in the frontcourt although Illinois did add redshirt freshman Kipper Nichols. He is a 6’6 forward who the Illini hope can contribute immediately. Mike Thorne Jr. returns after averaging 12.9 points per game last season and his return should help as he played just eight games last season before getting hurt.

Illinois was just 14-15-3 ATS last season and it may be hard for Illinois to improve on those numbers considering this year’s team doesn’t appear to be much better than the one a year ago.

Illinois Fighting Illini Picks

Illinois has a good backcourt but they don’t have enough proven talent upfront to do much this season. It will help that Mike Thorne Jr. returns from injury but he is not a superstar scorer.

The Illinois will struggle again in 2016-2017 and there won’t be an NCAA Tourney appearance. Just finishing with a winning record and playing in a second tier tournament like the CBI is probably the best the Illini can hope for this season.
