Kentucky Derby Handicapping

Trends and stats are really all you have to consider when you make a Kentucky Derby bet. Some of these trends and stats are important while others are not. The most important thing to consider is recent form. Unless a horse has run well recently he is unlikely to be the winner. It also helps if the horse has run in a big field before. Rarely does a horse adjust well to a big field if he has always been facing a smaller field.

Another big factor to consider when making a Kentucky Derby bet is the speed factor. You have to look at horses that have received at least one speed rating of 100 or more and preferably more than one. If you see a horse in the past performances that doesn’t have at least one rating of 100 in previous races then throw the horse out.

Kentucky Derby History

The Kentucky Derby goes all the way back to 1875 when the first Kentucky Derby was won by Aristides. The first Kentucky Derby was 1.5 miles but the distance was changed to the current mile and a quarter in 1896. It was not until the early 1900’s that Kentucky Derby betting gained popularity.

Only three fillies have ever won the Kentucky Derby, Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980, and Winning Colors in 1988. The largest Kentucky Derby field was in 1974 when 23 horses went to the post. Now the maximum amount of horses is limited to 20 horses. The smallest fields were in 1892 and 1905 as only three horses ran in those years. The first televised Kentucky Derby was in 1952.
