Breeders’ Cup

Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California is the site for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup which will be held on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th. This will be the 9th time that Santa Anita has hosted the Breeders’ Cup, most of any racetrack.  The Breeders’ Cup is considered the best two days of horse racing each year as there are four races on Friday and nine on Saturday. The biggest of the races each year is the $5 million dollar Breeders’ Cup Classic which takes place on Saturday. Because the Classic is the last of the races and is the most important one, it is televised each year by NBC. Let’s take a closer look at Breeders’ Cup betting, some interesting facts and the 2016 Breeders’ Cup schedule.

Go To Horses Odds

The Breeders’ Cup began in 1984 and through 2006 it was held just on Saturday.  It expanded to Friday and Saturday in 2007 and it has been held in the United States every year except in 1996 when it was held in Canada.

Breeders’ Cup History

The Breeders’ Cup was created in the early 1980’s as a championship day for the best horses in the world.  John R. Gaines is credited with the idea that he proposed in 1982.  The Breeders’ Cup was at one time the richest day in sports with million dollar purses but in 2008 the event was changed to a two-day event so the total prize purse money was split between two days which meant that the richest day in horse racing was the Dubai World Cup Night event.

Mike Smith holds the record for most Breeders’ Cup wins by a jockey with 22 while Jerry Bailey is second with 15 wins.

D. Wayne Lukas holds the most wins by a trainer with 20 while Bob Baffert is second with 12 wins.

Allen E. Paulson has the record by an owner for most money won at just over $8.7 million.  The top earning horse in history is Zenyatta with just over $4.6 million in earnings.

A number or horses have won the same Breeders’ Cup race more than once including Goldikova who won the Mile three times. The oldest horse to win a Breeders’ Cup race was Calidiscopio at age 9.

Favorites have won 92 of 279 Breeders’ Cup races.  There have been 50 horses to go off at odds-on with only 23 of those horses winning.  There have been 39 horses to go off at odds of 100-1 or more and only one, Arcangues won, as the horse won the Classic in 1993 at odds of 133-1

Santa Anita Park will host the race for the 9th time in 2016, the most of any track.  Churchill Downs has hosted the race eight times.
