MLS Soccer: Philadelphia vs Real Salt Lake
Friday, March 13th, 2015By Ej Garr
MLS Odds:The Philadelphia Union and Real Salt Lake both come off opening day with 0 - 0 Draws to open the 2015 season. Philadelphia opened the season at home against Colorado last weekend, and it is hard to look at those statistics and actually believe that the game finished scoreless.
Philadelphia dominated every aspect of the game, with a60-40 possession advantage, while out-shooting the Rapids 14 - 2. The Rapids didn't even register an official shot on goal, only had one corner kick, and played the last 22 minutes of the match a man down after defender Bobby Burling was sent off for picking up a second yellow card. As a result, he will obviously not be participating in this match.
Real Salt Lake was held to their 0 - 0 result, when they took on Portland at Providence Park to open the season. Portland had been stellar on defense right through the end of last year, and have now gone 4 games without surrendering a goal, carrying over to this year.
RSL keeper Nick Rimando was tested again and again by the Portland offense, facing 18 opportunities and making 6 or 7 quality saves that kept his team in the game right down to the wire. Portland also threw a late fury of pressing attacks at them, but were staved off long enough to secure an important road point for Salt Lake to open the year. Those points add up later, and anything on the road is better than nothing, as we know.
Now we match up two head coaches who played defense and goal keeper as players. Philly's head man Jim Curtin played defense in MLS for 9 years, mostly with Chicago, and Jeff Cassar was in net through his 11-year playing career.
Might we have another, low-scoring, defensive battle on our hands in this one? Let's see what we expect to happen.
Last 7 MLS Meetings:
The two have only met 7 times in MLS, with Real Salt Lake leading the series earning 2 Wins and 5 Draws. Philly has never beaten RSL.

Quick Analysis & Prediction Quick Analysis:
It makes sense why this Under 2.5 is -120, after seeing two clubs open the season with zero success finding the net opening weekend.
One game a season doesn’t make, and we can't just simply go by the fact that we saw a scoreless game played from each of them, but it is obvious to see that there are not too many passes of the eye-test to help us make a play on something other than the Under.
We are surprised, however, that the line setters are convinced that Philadelphia will not be walking out of here with any type of result. That line of +355 surely comes out making a statement, and that seems a little off in our opinion. We can assume they know that Philly has never walked away from a match with RSL finding more than a draw in 7 meetings, as we mentioned, but we are also talking about 5 draws in 7 meetings between the two clubs as well.
We are going to suggest the +0.5 handicap on Philadelphia at even money here, as well as the Under 2.5 at -120, because 1 - 1 almost sounds like a high scoring game with these two, and that will do us just fine if we see that result with both plays on the board.
It would be hard to argue with someone if they asked us about playing the draw itself, and the price is always nice on those types of calls, but hopefully we can cash two tickets instead of one, if we end up with that same draw at the end of the game.
