MLS Soccer: Los Angeles vs Portland
Friday, March 13th, 2015By Ej Garr
MLS Odds: To get 2015 started, the Galaxy defended their 2014 championship with a 2 - 0 home victory over Chicago. Now they travel north to face a Portland team who has held their last four opponents to clean sheets, dating back to the end of last year.
Los Angeles looked tight in their home opener, playing a lackluster first half that saw them go to the locker room tied at 0.Jose Villarreal put the team up 1 - 0 in the 65th-minute over Chicago, and Robbie Keane followed it up with his first goal of the year to make it 2 - 0, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. We were sorely disappointed in the Keane reaction to his goal, cursing up a storm, throwing F bombs around like he had been feeling the pressure of backing up his 2014 MVP season.
He has never been one known for his class off the field, and it didn't give us the impression that much has changed in that respect with that kind of celebration, if you want to call it that.
Portland carried over their defense from last year, ending 2014 with three straight clean sheets, and has now opened 2015 with a 0 - 0 result against Real Salt Lake last weekend. They did a great job keeping the ball out of their own net again, but failed in their efforts to find the net. This is coming from a team that put in 61 goals last year, en route to falling just one point shy of a playoff berth.
We know we are getting two of the more defensive-minded teams in MLS here, and that should make it reasonable to assume we could see another low-scoring first half, as both teams were 0 - 0 at the half in their respective matches last week.
Both teams scored each time the two clubs met last year, with two of the three Overs coming in, but despite these defenses we might actually see these two break out this weekend.

Quick Analysis & Prediction Quick Analysis:
Again, we know the defensive abilities of the two teams, and they showed it to us again opening day, each keeping a clean sheet. These two are very familiar with each other, despite only having 11 matches played between them and, if last year was any indication of how they play each other, we may actually see a few goals here to end the second weekend of the new season.
LA still has goal-scoring options, despite the loss of Landon Donovan, and Portland has proved that putting up 61 goals last year was no mistake.Even if you peek at the statistics from last weekend for Portland, they took 18 shots towards net, with 11 corner kicks, but just simply couldn't convert any of the opportunities to goals.
We expect these two to open it up a bit this week, being able to shake off the opening day jitters and find a flow that that we just did not see from either of them opening day.If the line setters are asking us to pay the $20 worth of juice on this Over 2.5, than that is exactly what we are going to do.
Play the Over, expecting that 2 - 1 result that cashes our ticket.
