MLS Soccer Betting: San Jose vs Real Salt Lake
Saturday, September 26th, 2015By Ej Garr
MLS Odds: San Jose looks to take advantage of a late season three-game home stand, with Real Salt Lake being the first guest at the table this Sunday afternoon. Televised on FOX Sports 1 at7 p.m., both Real Salt Lake and San Jose find themselves outside of the playoff picture, but the difference to make up is not exactly significant.
San Jose is just a point shy of Portland's sixth place seed entering the weekend, and Salt Lake has earned their way to the post-season discussion with a run of three wins in their last four outings. It's almost like the teams exchanged identities after August came to a close, as San Jose was riding a four-game win streak as September started.
With only two points in four games played, the exact opposite can be said for the Salt Lake situation. Real Salt Lake had lost four of their last five games in August across all competitions, and have taken three wins and a draw in two MLS matches and two Champions League matches combined since September started.
That is what we call role reversal, but each is a mere win away from overtaking Portland, should the Timbers struggle down the stretch.
San Jose just came off a four-game home stand before last weekend's match at Yankee Stadium, and after a big 1 - 0 win over Los Angeles, the Quakes could only manage two points from the remaining three games and lost 3 - 2 to New York City this past weekend.
NYCFC's Ned Grabavoy's brace, along with David Villa's tally in the 65th minute, seemed to give the expansion side an easy opportunity for three points. San Jose scored two goals in four minutes to pull the game within 3 - 2 with 15 minutes left to play, but nothing more was to be written other than a NYCFC 3 - 2 home win.
Real Salt Lake came up with a huge 3 - 0 win over the Galaxy last weekend at Rio Tinto Stadium, and followed it up with a 2 - 1 home win over Santa Tecla in their Champions League rematch from nine days before. The two played to a 0 - 0 draw in their Mexico encounter on August 15.
Mathematically, everyone is still alive in the Western Conference, so the last four games of the regular season for Salt Lake will feature teams that will likely face their own playoff scenarios.
Clarence Gooden is suspended for San Jose from accumulated yellow cards, and the Quakes will face some absences this weekend as well. Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi's left foot still has him on the sidelines, while Victor Bernardez, Paulo Renato, and Khari Stephenson also have leg injuries that see them questionable to go this weekend.
Last 10 MLS Meetings:
Real Salt Lake leads the recent series with 4 Wins, 3 Losses and 3 Draws in the last 10 MLS meetings.
1x2 3-Way Lines:
S.J -0.5 -105
RSL +0.5 -115
Total O/U 2.5:
Quick Analysis & Prediction
The 'Both Teams to Score' Prop bet comes in at -150, and the reason why is that San Jose is scoring at home, and Real Salt Lake has been horrible at slowing down opponents on the road this year.
RSL has given up a Western Conference-leading 29 away goals this season, and San Jose has surrendered a road goal in their last three home games.
All of it hopefully points to some goals finding the net, because we are going to put a marker on the total, and hope we pull and Ace / Jack out of the deck.
The Over 2.5 makes the board, and again we recognize the line setters conveying they expect both teams to score in the game. Hopefully, one of the two snap the 1 - 1 expectation, and cash us a ticket on the -125 offer to go Over the 2.5
