MLS Soccer Betting: Philadelphia vs Portland
Friday, July 10th, 2015By Ej Garr
MLS Odds: The Philadelphia Union and Portland Timbers meet for the only time in 2015, marking the last time Portland will have to travel farther East than Ohio this season. The Union are completing a four-game home stand that includes a home win in the U.S Open Cup round of 16, in which they combined to take seven of a possible nine points from three league outings. As they wrap up the home stand, there will still be a friendly match with Bournemouth onJuly 14at PPL Park, before embarking on a tough three-match assignment ahead.
The Union will head to Toronto next weekend and face the New York Red Bulls in the quarterfinals of the U.S Open Cup onJuly 21, before wrapping up July with a match at RFK Stadium to face first place DC United.
Philadelphia has had 10 days off since the 2 - 1 win over DC United in the round of 16 match in the Open Cup. Despite still leading all of MLS with 32 goals allowed this season, the Union find themselves only four points behind the final playoff positions in the Eastern Conference, trailing both the NY Red Bulls and Toronto who sit with 23 points.
The Portland Timbers seem to have everything together and are playing their best soccer at the moment. The team has won seven of their last nine outings in all competitions, which includes a 6 - 1 record in their last seven league matches. That is good enough for third place in the Western Conference table.
As we pointed out in the preview with San Jose and Houston, the Timbers are following up a 1 - 0 win over the Earthquakes last weekend, in which they completely controlled the game from start to finish. Portland waited until the 91st minute of added time to find the lone goal in the match that came off the boot of Jack Jewsbury. The Timbers outshot San Jose 23 - 7, and only allowed the Quakes two shots on net, while blocking eight attempts.
Portland has certainly been a much better home club over the last calendar year, as the Timbers have not won back to back road games since two away outings on June 7th and 24th of 2014. They have lost four of their last five games away from Providence Park.
5 MLS Meetings:
The two teams have met 5 times in MLS action, with Portland leading the series having 2 Wins, while playing to 3 Draws.
1x2 3-Way Lines:
Philadelphia Pk -110
Portland Pk -110
Total O/U 2.5:
Quick Analysis & Prediction
The line setters are not tipping their hand in the least in this game, giving both mutual respect on either the 3-Way or the Pk action.
Certainly surprised to see a +Money line on the total, however, as there should certainly be some scoring taking place when this match is said and done.
Portland is a completely different team away from home, and the Union still has a ton of goalkeeping issues to sort out.
We are throwing two plays on the board here, as we see a home win for the Union coming, although there is no reason to get overly greedy.
The Pk Draw no Bet action of -110 on the Union goes in as our first suggestion, while adding the Over 2.5 at +105 to the board as well.
A 2 - 1 final is surely a possibility here. The Union are well rested, while the Timbers have played twice since the last time Philly took the field. Tired legs late in the match could be the deciding factor, so hopefully the team that breaks the 1 - 1 draw in the second half is the home side that takes three points and a 2 - 1 win.
