MLS Soccer Betting: Los Angeles vs Portland
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015By Ej Garr
MLS Odds: The Portland Timbers enter StubHub Center to face the LA Galaxy, having won four consecutive games for the first time in their brief MLS history. Add to that a win over Seattle in the U.S Open Cup, and the confidence is brimming for Caleb Porter's club at the moment.
The Los Angeles Galaxy is also getting their season back on track, with 11 goals scored in their last two outings. The Galaxy comes off a 5 - 1 drubbing of the Philadelphia Union this past weekend, which we were happy to see, be it that we called the win for LA, and gave the Over as the recommended play.
In the Los Angeles outing in the U.S Open Cup last week, six goals were scored for the team over PSA Elite, who actually scored first in the game. This week, when head man Bruce Arena was asked if he liked the progress going forward, all he could muster up was a ‘we'll see.’
As we mentioned in the preview of the LA / Philly game, the Galaxy is in the midst of a favorable schedule that won't see them leave California until July 25. Granted, they will have back-to-back games with San Jose on the road in both MLS and U.S Cup action, but limited travel is surely a good thing.
With the Portland Timbers 2 - 0 win against the Houston Dynamo this past weekend at Providence Park, it was their second consecutive clean sheet and their third in the current four-game win streak. The Dynamo was limited to a single shot on goal, which didn't even come until late in the second half.
This four-game stretch that Portland is about to begin will surely give us more indications as to how well this Timber club is playing. Upon leaving LA, the Timbers face a rematch with Seattle this upcoming weekend, while also preparing for their U.S Open Cup match with Real Salt Lake. After their Cup game in Utah onJuly 1, they will return home to face San Jose onJuly 5in MLS action.
Last 12 MLS Meetings:
The two have met 12 times in MLS history, with the Galaxy leading the series with 5 Wins, 3 Losses and 4 Draws.
Also of note, there has been only one road win in the series that came in favor of LA in 2012.
1x2 3-Way Lines:
LA -0.5 -110
Portland +0.5 -110
Total O/U 2.5:
Quick Analysis & Prediction
Both teams sit in a third place tie with 25 points in the Western Conference standings, although they have both gotten there in completely different manners.
The Galaxy still only has six wins through 18 MLS outings, and is the only team in the West to still have not won a game away from home.
Portland grabbed all 12 possible points with four straight wins, and have hit their stride, relying on a strong defense, and timely saves from GK Adam Kwarasey to move up the table.
The last two times these two met last year, and the first meeting of 2015, each team has created numerous chances, while scoring plenty of goals over the last three meetings.
Granted, the LA success of late has come against a PSA Elite club, and a Philadelphia Union team that leads the league in goals allowed, but we do believe they will find moderate success breaking down the Timber back line.
Portland should also be able to also create some havoc on set pieces and in transition, so we will be turning to the total once again in this one.
The both-to-score prop we see listed at as high as -160 at some sites that offer the action, so with that expectation, and only needing a third to cash our ticket, the Over 2.5 at a reasonable -105 makes the recommendation for a play at StubHub Center to close out the mid-week matches in MLS action.
