2014 Olympic Hockey Odds: The United States takes on Slovenia while Russia plays Slovakia in Group A action on Sunday at the 2014 Winter Olympics. The USA and Russia are the top teams in Group A and they will be favored in their respective games on Sunday. The Russian team might have the tougher game as Slovakia has some talent and could surprise. The Unites States is not expected to get much of a test against a week Slovenia squad.
Here is a look at both of the games in Group A for Sunday and Olympic hockey picks.
United States vs. Slovenia
The USA shouldn’t get much of a test in this one as the only player of note on Slovenia is Anze Kopitar. And it is not like he is a great player anymore. It is just hard to see how Slovenia scores against either Jonathan Quick or Ryan Miller. And the USA should be able to find enough offense from players like Patrick Kane and Phil Kessel to put this game away early.
Russia vs. Slovakia
The Russian team has a lot of offensive talent led by Aex Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, Ilya Kovalchuk and Evgeni Malkin but it is their goaltending that gives them a real chance to take the gold as both Semyon Varlamov and Sergei Bobrovsky are really good. This game might be interesting if Russia has a letdown after playing the United States. The Slovakian team has some talent with Jaroslav Halak in goal and Zdeno Chara on the blueline. I don’t think they have enough scoring as the only player of note on offense is Marian Hossa but this game might be closer than some people expect.
Olympic Hockey Picks
I can’t see Slovenia being competitive against the USA so I will lay the goals and take the United States. I do think that Slovakia can give Russia a major scare so I will take them plus the goals.
