Sprint Cup Odds Favor Jimmie Johnson Again in 2013

The 2013 Sprint Cup season gets underway in about a month with Jimmie Johnson the favorite in Sprint Cup odds to win the NASCAR championship. Let’s look at J.J. and other top contenders.
If there is one thing we know about Jimmie Johnson and his crew chief Chad Knaus is that they are always ahead of the curve in NASCAR. With NASCAR changing to the new Gen 6 car you can expect some teams to struggle earlier in the season but that likely won’t be the case with Johnson. J.J. is the favorite in Sprint Cup odds to win the championship this season and he is hungry to win the title after failing the past two seasons.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
The new Gen 6 car should really appeal to Jr. especially on restrictor plate tracks. Jr. was having a great season a year ago until suffering a concussion. This really could be the year that NASCAR’s most popular driver finally wins the Sprint Cup Championship.
It was a miserable season for Edwards last year as he simply flopped after just missing out on winning the championship in 2011. He didn’t win a single race and has now gone 69 straight races without a victory. He gets a new crew chief for this year in Jimmy Fennig and a big rebound season is possible for Edwards.
The defending champion is probably not a good bet to win the title again this season. Penske Racing has switched from Dodge to Ford and it is hard to see Keselowski doing as well this season.
If there is a driver who is right on the cusp of winning the Sprint Cup Championship then it has to be Hamlin. He nearly won it in 2010 and was in good shape last season heading into the Chase. Maybe 2013 is finally his year.
It was not a good season a year ago for Kyle Busch. He struggled virtually all year and didn’t even make the Chase. Perhaps he will be motivated now that Matt Kenseth is part of JGR.
I like the chances of Kenseth having a big 2013 season. He moves over to Joe Gibbs Racing and should flourish with Hamlin and Busch.
