Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Picks
Friday, August 17th, 2012By Blade Armstrong
The race for the final two wild card spots in the Chase is heating up with four races remaining beginning with Sunday in Michigan. Five drivers are listed with single-digit odds at the sportsbook for this race that can be seen on ESPN. Let’s preview the race and make our picks.
Wild Card Spots
Much of the attention is on the two wild card spots with four races remaining before the Chase. Just as a reminder, after the race at Richmond on September 8th, the top 10 drivers in points make the chase and then two wild cards also get in. Those are the drivers with the most wins who are also ranked in the top 20 in points. Kasey Kahne is currently in the top wild card spot while Ryan Newman is in the second spot. Kyle Busch is right behind the top two with Jeff Gordon in fourth, Marcos Ambrose in fifth and Joey Logano in sixth. Everything can change in a single week as Newman, Busch, Gordon, Ambrose and Logano have one win each.
Jimmie Johnson is a slight favorite with odds of 5.5-1 at Diamond Sportsbook and is followed closely by Kyle Busch at 6-1, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart at 7-1 and Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle at 9-1. Last year it was Busch winning this race while Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag two years ago. Earlier this season at Michigan it was Dale Earnhardt Jr. ending his four year winless streak.
There have been seven season sweeps at Michigan since 1969 but none since 1995. In the previous 86 races at Michigan, 16 have been won from the pole including three years ago when Brian Vickers pulled it off.
We like Greg Biffle at odds of 9-1 to get the win this week. Roush cars have had a lot of success in Michigan and Biffle is having a very good season. Biffle is almost the forgotten man in NASCAR even though he is just one point behind Jimmie Johnson for the points lead. We are also going to take a shot with Carl Edwards who is listed with odds of 9-1. He could get right back into the wild card picture with a win on Sunday.
