First Look at 2013 Kentucky Derby Futures
Wednesday, February 6th, 2013By Ken Williams
The first Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool will be held this week so odds will be out on 23 horses with the rest of the horses lumped into the field. Let’s look at the horses who are ones to watch in the next few months and the likely favorites in 2013 Kentucky Derby futures.
The hot horse with three months to go before the Kentucky Derby is Verrazano who is trained by Todd Pletcher. The horse has been scintillating in his two wins, winning by a combined 24 lengths. Verrazano will be trying to break a huge Kentucky Derby trend as no horse that did not start as a 2-year old has won the Derby since Apollo in 1882. We have been getting closer to a horse breaking that jinx and it might just happen this year with Verrazano. It is really early but this horse is listed at about 10-1 in Kentucky Derby futures at the sportsbook and it would not be a surprise to see the horse go off at 6-5 in the Derby if he is really this good.
The main contender to Verrazano this early is Bob Baffert’s Flashback. The horse looked good in winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. That is the same race that I’ll Have Another won last year.
This horse won the Holy Bull and his next start will be in the Florida Derby.
Not many people are even talking about this horse because of the top two but Violence is still in the mix.
This is another of the horses trained by Todd Pletcher. He won the Withers Stakes in New York as he beat Escapefromreality by a neck.
The concern for this horse is whether he can even go long enough to be a contender in the Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky Derby futures offer a lot of value but the danger in betting horses this early is that anything can happen between now and the Kentucky Derby. But that is the risk/reward you get with Kentucky Derby futures at the online sportsbook.
