Tiger Woods may not be the best player in the world anymore or routinely favored in golf betting odds at Diamond sportsbook but he still has the respect of Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples. The suspense over whether or not Couples would pick Woods for the team ended on Thursday when an announcement was made.
"I've told him that he's going to be on the team," Couples said, "There is no reason for me to wait till Sept. 26 to pick Tiger. He's the best player in the world forever."
The top ten players for the U.S. team automatically qualify for the team and then Couples has two captain’s picks. He used one of those picks to take Tiger. It has not been a good year for Woods who is 28th on the Presidents Cup list. He has not been in contention for a win in more than two years and is simply not the player he once was. That didn’t stop Couples from picking Tiger for the team. "Everyone else can have their opinion, but as far as I know Jay Haas and myself are the captains and we want him on this team." Couples said.
There is a month to go before the official September 26th date when selections for the Presidents Cup team have to be announced. It will be interesting to see if Bill Haas, who is ranked 10th can hang onto a spot. Right behind him in the standings are Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler. It would make Couples job a lot easier if Haas is in the Top 10 since Bill Haas is the son of co-captain Jay Haas.
The Presidents Cup will take place at Royal Melbourne in Australia in mid-November. The U.S. has dominated the Presidents Cup in recent years in golf odds, winning in 2005, 2007 and in 2009. The last time the International team won was in squads tied in 1998 and that is also the last time the event was held at Royal Melbourne in Australia.
