Tuesday, January 26th, 2016By Tom Wilkinson
Super Bowl 50 Odds: The Carolina Panthers are favored vs. the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, February 7th on CBS. The Panthers finished the regular season with the best record in the NFL at 15-1 and they rolled over Seattle and Arizona to reach the Super Bowl. The Broncos finished the regular season 12-4 and defeated Pittsburgh and New England to reach the title game. This game will have quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Cam Newton who were each No. 1 draft picks making this the first Super Bowl in history to feature quarterbacks selected first overall.
Let’s look at the game, Super Bowl 50 odds and Super Bowl 50 picks.
Carolina Panthers -4.5, total 45
Denver Broncos 14-4 SU, 9-8-1 ATS
The Denver Broncos have a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Peyton Manning but this team wins because of their defense. The Broncos were 4th in fewest points allowed but they were first in fewest yards allowed, first against the pass and first in sacks. Denver harassed Tom Brady and found a way to stop the Patriots to reach the Super Bowl. And Denver knows how to win close games as they were 10-3 this season in games decided by 7 points or less. The Broncos will look to run the ball and play defense and have Manning make a few big plays. "It's a great honor to be going back to the Super Bowl -- playing Super Bowl 50," Manning said. "I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be a fun two weeks."
Carolina Panthers 17-1 SU, 13-5 ATS
The Panthers led the league in scoring this season as they averaged just over 31 points per game. They were 6th on defense as they allowed just over 19 points per contest. The offense is all about quarterback Cam Newton who led the league with 45 TDs, 10 of those which game on the ground. The Panthers started fast in almost all of their games this season as they outscored opponents 321-128 in the first two quarters. The Carolina offense is really all about Newton making plays as there are very few play makers on the offense although Greg Olsen is an excellent tight end and Ted Ginn Jr. has had some moments at wide receiver. The Carolina defense is good but it is not great. The Panthers thrived this season because they were able to force other teams into making mistakes. The Panthers led the league in interceptions and turnover margin.
The Broncos are 4-1-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Broncos are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 playoff games. The Panthers are 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Panthers are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 playoff games. The Under is 5-1 in Broncos last 6 playoff games. The Over is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 playoff games.
I will take the points with the Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
