AFC and NFC Championship Odds and Picks
Tuesday, January 19th, 2016By Tom Wilkinson
NFL Odds: The NFL Conference Championship games take place on Sunday, January 24th with the AFC title game starting at 3:05 pm Eastern on CBS as the New England Patriots visit the Denver Broncos while the NFC Championship game starts at 6:40 pm Eastern on FOX as the Arizona Cardinals visit the Carolina Panthers. The Patriots are 3-point favorites at the Broncos while the Panthers are 3-point favorites as they host the Cardinals.
Here is a look at both games and NFL picks.
Sunday, January 24th
AFC Championship Game
New England Patriots at Denver Broncos (3:05 pm Eastern, CBS)
New England Patriots -3, total 44
The New England Patriots are road favorites on Sunday as they visit the Denver Broncos in the AFC title game. These teams met earlier this season in Denver and it was the Broncos winning in overtime by a score of 30-24. That defeat was the first of the season for the Patriots who went on to lose three more times in the regular season. Injuries were a major problem for the Patriots but they are healthier now and last week they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots score 29 points per game and allow 20 points per contest. They are 3-5 ATS on the road this season with 5 games going over and 3 going under.
The Broncos came back to defeat Pittsburgh last week as the defense carried the team once again. The Denver defense is allowing just over 18 points per game, 4th best in the league. The offense has really not been that good and Peyton Manning is a shell of his former self. He made just enough plays last week for the Broncos to survive against Pittsburgh. The Broncos are scoring just over 22 points per game. They are 3-5-1 ATS at home with 6 games going under, 2 going over with 1 push.
The Patriots have won six of the last ten meetings in this series and gone 6-4 ATS with six of the last seven going over. It has been a home team series for the most part with the Broncos winning 7 of the last 10 in Denver with seven of the ten going over.
I will lay the points and take the Patriots in this contest.
NFC Championship Game
Arizona Cardinals at Carolina Panthers (6:40 pm Eastern, FOX)
Carolina Panthers -3, total 47
The Carolina Panthers are slight favorites as they host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals slipped past the Packers last week while the Panthers held on to beat the Seahawks. The Cardinals have the second-best offense in the NFL as they average almost 31 points per game while they were 7th-best on defense allowing just under 20 points per contest. They were a very good road team this season going 6-2 ATS with five of those games going over and three going under.
The Panthers were the top scoring team in the NFL this season as they averaged just over 31 points per game. They were 6th best on defense as they allowed just over 19 points per contest. Carolina is 7-2 ATS at home with six games going over, two going under with one push.
The Panthers have won 7 of the last 10 meetings and they are 6-4 ATS with two of the last three going over. The teams last met in the playoffs a year ago with the Panthers winning 27-16 at home. Carolina is 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS in the last eight meetings at home in this series with three of the last five going over.
I will take the points with Arizona and also play the game over.
