A berth in Super Bowl XLVI will be on the line in the AFC and NFC Championship games on Sunday. The Baltimore Ravens play at New England in the early game on Sunday while the New York Giants travel to San Francisco to face the 49ers in the late game. Let’s take a look at some NFC and AFC Championship betting trends as we begin to look at Sunday’s games.

The AFC Championship game between the Ravens and Patriots is set for 3 pm Eastern time on Sunday and will be televised on CBS while the NFC Championship game has the New York Giants at San Francisco on Fox starting at 6:30 pm Eastern.

When you look at the two championship games you probably will start by considering the home teams. When it comes to straight up that is not a bad idea as home teams are 23-15 in the last 38 conference championship games. The problem for bettors though is that teams also have to cover the NFL betting pointspread and home teams are just 18-19-1 ATS in the last 38 title games. What you can do though is take the AFC and NFC Championship games over the total. Last year was the exception to the rule as both games went over under as Pittsburgh beat the Jets while the Packers beat Chicago. Normally the games go over. In the last 38 games, the over has come through a total of 23 times.

What about other notes for AFC and NFC Championship betting? The lines are usually smaller as you would expect in the title games with the average pointspread since 1993 being about 5 points. This time around the NFL lines have the Patriots as 7.5 point favorites in the AFC title game while the 49ers are a small favorite in the NFC title game. If you see the line move at all this week you probably should ignore it. In the last decade or so, line moves in the AFC and NFC title games have meant little as bettors following the big moves are just 4-5-1 against the spread.
