The Ohio State Buckeyes will not be a national championship contender in Urban Meyer’s first year as head coach and they will not be playing in a bowl game. The NCAA handed Ohio State a one-year bowl ban and other sanctions for violations that occurred under former head coach Jim Tressel. Ohio State football betting may not be as good as expected in 2012.
Ohio State Penalties
The university believed that they would not get penalized with a bowl ban in 2012 but the NCAA disagreed. The NCAA hit Ohio State with a bowl ban that will keep the Buckeyes out of national championship contention next year. Ohio State will also be ineligible for the Big 10 title in Urban Meyer’s first year and they will lose scholarships in upcoming years. The NCAA was upset that former coach Jim Tressel knew of violations and didn’t report them. "Of great concern to the committee was the fact that the former head coach became aware of these violations and decided not to report the violations," the NCAA said in their report. Ohio State is on probation through 2014 and their football scholarships will be reduced. Ohio State had already imposed some self-imposed sanctions reducing scholarships by five but the NCAA increased that number to nine, three during each of the next three years.
Ohio State was caught off guard by the NCAA’s penalties but they will not appeal. “We are surprised and disappointed with the NCAA’s decision,” said Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith. “However, we have decided not to appeal the decision because we need to move forward as an institution.” New football coach Urban Meyer may have been the one who was surprised the most as he took the Ohio State head coaching job assuming that the Buckeyes would not receive a bowl ban. Meyer had been telling recruits that the Buckeyes wouldn’t get additional penalties from the NCAA. It looks like Meyer’s arrogance finally caught up to him and now he will coach a team in 2012 that won’t be playing in the postseason.
