Missouri 7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS
The Tigers won their last three games of the season to finish with a winning record and head to their seventh consecutive bowl game. It will be the third time in recent years that the Tigers will be playing in the Independence Bowl. It is a good bowl game for the Tigers as they get a chance to show off their team to potential recruits in the south. "I think (heading to the Independence Bowl is) a plus, there's no question about it," Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel said. "We're in SEC country.” The Tigers are led by quarterback James Franklin who had 2,733 yards passing and 839 rushing and a total of 33 TDs this season.
North Carolina 7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS
The Tar Heels will be playing for interim coach Everett Withers and they have no real motivation to play for him as he has been hired by Ohio State as a defensive coach. Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora will take over as the head coach next season but he is still with his team for their bowl game. Withers said the players will play hard but who really knows. "I'm excited for our players, especially this group of seniors, to advance to a bowl game for the fourth straight season," said Withers, “We now have a chance to win eight games for the fourth straight year and win our second consecutive bowl game." North Carolina does have some offensive talent with running back Giovani Bernard, wide receiver Dwight Jones and quarterback Bryn Renner.
