The British Columbia Lions beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34-23 to win the 99th Grey Cup in front of a sellout crowd at B.C. Place Stadium. The Lions were favored by a touchdown in football betting at the sportsbook and delivered for bettors in the finale of the 2011 CFL season.
Home Win
The Lions were fortunate enough to be playing at home in the Grey Cup and they delivered the win for their home fans. A team had not won the title in front of their home fans since B.C. did it in 1994 and then you have to go back to 1977 for the previous time when Montreal beat Edmonton at home.
Lulay Leads the Way
The turnaround for British Columbia this season was amazing as the Lions started 0-5 and then went 12-1 the rest of the way. The Lions are the first team in CFL history to win a title after losing their first five games. They were led by quarterback Travis Lulay who was named the CFL’s most outstanding player for the season. Lulay threw two touchdown passes in the win over Winnipeg and didn’t throw an interception as he also won game MVP honors. Lulay finished 21-of-37 passing for 320 yards and two touchdowns.
B.C. led 31-9 over Winnipeg and it was looking like a rout in football betting in the Grey Cup. The Blue Bombers didn’t roll over though and quarterback Buck Pierce led Winnipeg to two touchdowns to cut the lead to 31-23. An onside kick failed for the Blue Bombers and a B.C. field goal ended any chance that Winnipeg had.
Winnipeg ran for just 41 yards in the loss and head coach Paul LaPolice said his team just didn’t get anything going on the ground to take pressure off the passing game. “That was the first time in a couple of weeks we were unable to run the ball and create first downs,” he said. “We had to get more rhythm offensively.” Pierce was 19-of-37 passing for 250 yards and two TDs but did throw an interception. Winnipeg was the second-worst passing team in the CFL so not running the ball pretty much ended their chances of winning the Grey Cup.
