Cycling Betting: The third and final Grand Tour of the cycling season is the Vuelta a Espana which begins on Saturday. The race takes place over three weeks and has a number of tough mountain stages. There will be 11 summit finishes including the Alto de L’Angliru in Stage 20. The race appears to be wide open with Vincenzo Nibali a slight favorite in cycling odds at Diamond sportsbook. This race begins on Saturday, August 24th and concludes on Sunday, September 15th.
Let’s look at the race, some of the contenders and cycling odds available at Diamond sportsbook.
Three of the world’s top cyclists are skipping the race as Tour de France winner Chris Froome, runner-up Nairo Quintana and defending Vuelta champion Alberto Contador will not be racing. That means the top three favorites are Giro d'Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali, Joaquim Rodriguez and Alejandro Valverde.
Recent Vuelta Winners
2012: Alberto Contador
2011: Juan Jose Cobo
2010: Vincenzo Nibali
2009: Alejandro Valverde
2008: Alberto Contador
2007: Denis Menchov
2006: Alexandre Vinokourov
2005: Denis Menchov
2004: Roberto Heras
2003: Roberto Heras
Many people are probably going to take Nibali since he won the Giro but his form since that win has been poor. Since this race is going to take place primarily in the mountains, the top sprinters are skipping the race. I think taking some longshots are the way to go when betting the Vuelta. I like the chances of Sky's Rigoberto Uran and his teammate Sergio Henao is an interesting choice.
RadioShack's Fabian Cancellara might also be a good longshot choice. Not to be left out of consideration is Britain’s Andrew Fenn. He doesn’t get the publicity of Mark Cavendish but he may be a factor in this race.
I like Henao and Samuel Sanchez at odds of about 12-1 each my longshot will be Uran at odds of about 25-1.
