Tuesday, March 1st, 2016By Tom Wilkinson
Boxing Odds: Luis Ortiz is a big favorite to defeat Tony Thompson in a heavyweight bout on Saturday, March 5th at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C. that can be seen on HBO. Ortiz is unbeaten in his career at 24-0 with 21 knockouts and he will be defending his WBA interim heavyweight title against Thompson who comes into this bout with a record 40-6 with 27 knockouts.
Here is a look at the fight and boxing predictions.
Luis Ortiz -2025
Tony Thompson +1025
Ortiz Expected to Stay Unbeaten
Ortiz has won all 24 of his previous fights and he is a huge favorite to defeat Thompson. Ortiz is hoping for bigger fights down the road but for now he will have to settle for the veteran Thompson. “This fight is just another steppingstone on my path to becoming the unified heavyweight world champion,” said Ortiz, “I came to the United States to chase my American Dream and fighting in the nation’s capital is a dream come true.
My life is coming full circle, and I know that this fight will put me a step closer to achieving everything I have worked so hard for in my career.” Ortiz doesn’t have a big name because he really hasn’t done much with his best win coming last December against Bryant Jennings. And that fight was close until Ortiz won it in the 7th round.
Thompson Looking for Huge Upset
Thompson is way past his prime but he believes he still can beat Ortiz who has not faced many top fighters. “I’m happy to be back on HBO fighting for another world title,” said Thompson, “If you look at my competition and his (Ortiz), it’s not even close. This isn’t the amateurs. I’m going to use my experience as a professional to take him places he’s never been. Odlanier Solis was a great Cuban amateur but he was also an Olympic gold medalist, and I beat him twice.
Ortiz thinks he has it tough. I’ve been avoided for my entire career. Just about all my fights have been on short notice and in foreign countries. If I fought the guys Ortiz fought, I’d be undefeated too. If Ortiz is King Kong, I’m Godzilla; Godzilla coming to whoop some ass!”
Ortiz will probably win this bout but the price is insanely high as Thompson does have a lot of experience and he is not without a chance to hit Ortiz with a big shot. Thompson could be worth a small shot at odds of more than 10-1 and taking the rounds over may also be worth a look.
