Sergio Gabriel Martinez is about a 2-1 favorite against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze this fight, take a look at the boxing betting numbers and make our pick.
Martinez -210 vs. Chavez Jr. (Rounds 11.5 over -175)
This fight is the premier one on Saturday which is why it is on HBO’s pay per view. Chavez comes into the fight at 46-0-1 with 32 knockouts while Martinez is 49-2-2 with 28 knockouts.
Matchup Favors Martinez
When analyzing the fight I see that the matchup favors Martinez. He is just the second southpaw that Chavez has ever faced. Martinez is the better boxer and while Chavez might have more power, it is pretty close. Martinez has been able to wear down most of his opponents and he may be able to do the same thing to Chavez. There are reports that Chavez is going to come into this fight near 200 lbs but whether that is good news for him is in debate. Chavez has only finished two of his last seven opponents at the upper weight. If this fight goes the distance as many people predict then Martinez is likely to have a huge edge.
Boxing Betting Prediction
It is debatable whether Chavez Jr. is a big name. His dad was definitely a fighter you had to see but Chavez Jr. is not in the same class. Yes, he is better than he was years ago but his laundry list of weak opponents is pretty long. Chavez Jr. is going to try and turn this fight against Martinez into a brawl because he is not going to win any other way. Martinez is simply better than Chavez Jr. in virtually every area. The one concern for Martinez is that he tries to get into a slugfest with Chavez Jr. In that case he could get caught in the corners. I don’t see it happening as Martinez just has too much skill. The price in boxing betting is a little bit high but I will still take Martinez to win. Based on what both fighters have said this fight may not go the distance. I will take a shot with the under on the rounds option at plus money.
