Boxing Odds: Vanes Martirosyan takes on Erislandy Lara on Saturday, May 21st in Las Vegas on Showtime. Martirosyan actually comes into this fight with the better record as he is 36-2-1 in his career with 21 knockouts while Lara is 22-2-2 with 13 knockouts. These two fought back in 2012 and the fight was ruled a technical draw when Martisoyan suffered a cut from an accidental head butt.

    Lara Defending Middleweight Title

Lara will be defending his WBA and IBO light middleweight titles on Saturday as he takes on Martirosyan. Lara is talking like he is going to win this fight easily and then he wants to fight the winner of Alvarez vs. Golovkin if they end up fighting. “My goal is to unify all of the belts and clean out the [154-pound] division, and then move up and fight GGG [Golovkin] or Canelo again,” says Lara, “My main focus is Vanes right now, but I would fight either guy or both of them in my next two fights. Golovkin has always been on my radar, and I’ve called him out many times, but I’m not chasing anyone.”

This will be a rematch between Lara and Martirosyan that no one really is too excited about. The two fought to a nine-round technical draw in a 154-pound title eliminator in 2012. It was not a pretty fight and it ended when there was an accidental head butt that caused a cut over Martirosyan’s left eye. Lara won his next fight as he defeated Alfredo Angulo to win the interim world title and he defended that title with a win against Austin Trout. Lara then lost to Saul Alvarez in a non-title fight and then he defended his title again with wins over Ishe Smith, Delvin Rodriguez and Jan Zaveck. Martirosyan has gone 4-2 since the draw against Lara.

Lara is trying to remain focused on Martirosyan. “I have a tough fight in front of me with Vanes, and I’m not thinking about anyone else but him,” Lara said, “I look to fight the best, and when a challenge is [offered], you will see how fast I jump at the opportunity. The best of Erislandy Lara is yet to be seen.”

    Boxing Picks

Lara should find a way to win this fight but the price is simply way too high as Martirosyan is not without a chance. I will avoid a side and just go over the rounds total.
