Derry Mathews vs. Terry Flanagan Odds and Picks
Wednesday, March 9th, 2016By Tom Wilkinson
Boxing Odds: Terry Flanagan is a big favorite to defend his WBO lightweight title against Derry Mathews on Saturday, March 12th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. These two were originally scheduled to fight last month but Flanagan pulled out due to a foot injury. They will now go against each other on Saturday with Flanagan looking to extend his unbeaten streak to 30 straight fights.
Here is a look at the bout and boxing picks.
Last Chance for Mathews
The chance of Mathews ever getting another title fight seems remote so Mathews will be laying everything on the line in this fight against Flanagan.
"Everything in my career has led up to this moment and it really doesn't get any bigger than this," said Mathews. "If I get beat I'm not going to get another shot at a world title and that's what's driving me on. Losing just isn't an option. When I beat Terry he'll be able to come again because he's still young but this is last chance saloon for me." Mathews is 38-9-2 in his career with 20 knockouts. He has won each of his last four fights, three by decision.
Flanagan Unbeaten but Untested
Flanagan comes into this bout with a record of 29-0 with 12 knockouts. He won the lightweight title in 2015 when Jose Zepeda couldn’t continue due to injury and then Flanagan defended the belt with a win over Diego Magdaleno. The question is how much credit does Flanagan get for beating Magladeno? Is Flanagan really worthy of being such a huge favorite in this fight against Mathews?
These two met in 2012 with Flanagan winning by decision. The interesting part of that bout was that it was only three rounds and it was a very intense three rounds. Both fighters seem to have improved since then but Flanagan said that Mathews has no chance in this fight. "Derry is kidding himself if he thinks he's getting his hands on my world title," said Flanagan, "I'm fitter, faster and stronger than last time we met. I've got too much for Derry to handle and there's no way he'll stand up to my big punches. I'm the younger and hungrier fighter and on the night I'll be too quick for him."
The price on this bout is simply ridiculous as Mathews is not without a chance. Flanagan is the younger and better fighter but he is not a great fighter which is what these odds suggest. I will make a small play simply on price and take Mathews at +600.
