Boxing Odds - Tony Bellew vs Ilunga Makabu Preview
Tuesday, May 24th, 2016By Tom Wilkinson
Boxing Odds: Ilunga Makabu will take on Tony Bellew for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title on Sunday, May 29th at Goodison Park in Liverpool. Makabu has more power but Bellew will have a huge edge in crowd support with the fight taking place in Liverpool. Makabu is 19-1 in his career with 18 of those wins coming by knockout while Bellew is 26-2-1 with 16 of his wins coming by knockout.
Let’s look at the bout and boxing picks.
Ilunga Makabu -156
Tony Bellew +131
Home Town Advantage for Bellew
The biggest advantage for Bellew is the crowd support with this fight taking place at Goodison Park, home of Everton. Bellew said that fighting in front of his home fans will not put any added pressure on him. "No pressure at all. All the pressure went the minute I knew it was going to happen here because it's like I've achieved a dream. I've won, I'm fighting at Goodison Park, what kind of pressure is there?” Bellew said, “The icing on cake will be winning the world title.” Bellew is well known as he starred in the film “Creed” where he played 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan.
Bellew can’t wait for this fight that will take place at the home of Everton, his favorite football club. “I'm simply humbled and honored,” said Bellew,
“It's beyond the dream for me. It's truly amazing that all these people and the club have backed one of their own. May the 29th can't come soon enough.”
Bellew will not have an easy time against Makabu who has won 18 of his fights by knockout. The last time a fight went to a decision for Makabu was in 2013 when he lost his only fight to Dmytro Kucher in a 12 round majority decision. The last fight for Makabu was in May of last year when Makabu went 11 rounds to get past Thabiso Mchunu. The only loss for Makabu came way back in 2008.
It would be a good story if Bellew was able to get the win in front of his home fans but the problem for Bellew is that Makabu is the better fighter. The only real chance for Bellew would be if this fight goes the distance and he gets some home town judging. I will lay the small price and take Makabu to get the win.
