The Los Angeles Angels made the biggest splash in the offseason, signing first baseman Albert Pujols to a 10-year deal worth $254 million dollars. Los Angeles Angels betting is going to get a lot of attention in 2012 with Pujols leading the team.
Pujols is Great, but the Angels Overpaid
There is no denying that Albert Pujols is a great player. He is a three-time MVP who hit .299 with 37 home runs and 99 RBIs last year. Pujols is 31-years old and last year was the first time in his career that he did not finish with at least 100 RBIs. It was thought that Pujols would re-sign with St. Louis but the Cardinals were only offering a nine-year deal worth about $200 million and the Angels offered an extra year and more money. Pujols could end up as the best player in baseball history by the time he retires but his best days are likely behind him. He will still be great, but the chances that his skills start to decline are high. And the Angels are going to be paying him $254 million dollars. That is a lot more money than owner Arte Moreno paid for the Angels entire franchise in 2003.
You can look at the contract that the New York Yankees gave to Alex Rodriguez and realize that giving Albert Pujols a 10-year deal worth $254 million is not a good deal for the Angels in the long run. It is however, a great move in the short term. Pujols makes them a legitimate World Series contender in baseball betting odds at the offshore sportsbook and the “win now” mentality is very evident with the Angels.
Angels Sign C.J. Wilson
The Angels didn’t stop with the addition of Pujols as they signed C.J. Wilson to a five-year, $77.5 million dollar deal. Wilson was the top free agent pitcher on the market and the Angels paid him a ton of money to pitch in Anaheim. Wilson went 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA for Texas last season and led the league in starts with 34. He is another great addition that will impact Los Angeles Angels betting next season.
