Baseball Betting - A Prince of a Deal for Fielder in Detroit

    MLB Betting - Detroit Tigers

It was just last week that the Detroit Tigers looked like a team that could slip in baseball betting as they lost Victor Martinez to injury. A week later the Tigers made up for that loss as they signed free agent slugger Prince Fielder to a monster $214 million dollar deal.

Fourth Highest Deal in Baseball History

The Tigers are going to be paying Prince Fielder a ridiculous amount of money. $214 million for a player who can’t play much in the field is insanity. The Milwaukee Brewers would have liked to keep Fielder but the price was simply too high. Scott Boras is the agent for Fielder and he got his client a huge payday. "Scott said from Day 1 it was going to be $200 million," Milwaukee general manager Bob Melvin said, "When you hear those kinds of numbers, we couldn't get involved in that. All I can say is we had the feeling it was going to be very difficult to keep him." The $214 million dollar deal is the third-highest in baseball history behind only the two deals signed by Alex Rodriguez, one with Texas and the other with New York and the recent deal that Albert Pujols signed with the Angels.

    Tigers Replace Martinez

The Tigers lost Victor Martinez to a knee injury that will likely keep him out for the season but now they replace him with Prince Fielder. Martinez hit .330 with 103 RBIs last season but Fielder should be able to match or surpass those numbers. Fielder hit .299 with 38 homers and 120 RBIs last year with Milwaukee.

    Will Detroit be Overvalued?

The question to answer in baseball betting with the Tigers in 2012 is whether they will now be overvalued because they have Fielder. The answer is yes. While Fielder is a very good player, he is really not that much better than Martinez. And keep in mind that Fielder no longer will be hitting in the band box that his Miller Park in Milwaukee but instead will be hitting in the pitcher friendly Comerica Park in Detroit.
